2010 - Jason Booth

 Jason Booth

The Winnipeg chapter of the Professional Writers Association of Canada is pleased to announce that Jason Booth is the recipient of the 2010 PWAC Scholarship.  This scholarship, along with a one year membership provided by the PWAC National Office, is awarded annually to a mature student finishing the second year of the Red River College Creative Communications program majoring in writing.

Before enrolling in Creative Communications, Jason worked for Frantic Films as a visual effects compositor on 27 feature films. An accomplished artist, his work has been exhibited with Cre8ery and Outworks galleries.

Jason is also a published illustrator and digital photo editor.  His passion for the visual arts has inspired him to study at galleries and museums worldwide, including London’s National Gallery.

Jason’s final project in Creative Communications was a fantasy novella which he continues to develop into a full length novel. He also won the Writer’s Collective of Manitoba 2009 Poetry Contest.

A resident of Winnipeg, Jason’s goal is to pursue a career as a copywriter while maintaining his passion for fiction writing and visual art in his personal life.

2009 - Christine Mazur

Christine Mazur

Congratulations to Christine Mazur, winner of the 2009 PWAC Manitoba Scholarship Award for outstanding writing skills. Christine was also the winner of the CBC Barbara Frum award for Interviewing Skills.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Christine completed a Master’s degree in English Literature at the University of Manitoba in 1997, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta in 2000.

In University she wrote for both The Manitoban and The Gateway arts sections, and while in Law School, was writer and editor of the faculty student newspaper, Cannons of Construction.

After returning to Winnipeg, she wrote two writer profiles for the Manitoba Writer’s Guild magazine Wordwrap and regularly contributed articles to the Manitoba Naturalists Society and Alpine Club of Canada – Manitoba Section (ACC) newsletters.

In celebration of the ACC’s centennial year in 2006, she proposed, edited and published a collection of stories by and about club members from Manitoba from 1906 to the present. The book, called Manitoba Climbers is still available at Mountain Equipment Co-Op.

After finding that most of her time and interest was consumed with writing activities rather than legal, she took the plunge and made a career change by completing a diploma in Creative Communications at Red River College, majoring in Journalism. Currently, she is the Marketing & Submissions Coordinator at Turnstone Press.

 2008 - Erin Chatelain

Erin Chatelain

Erin began her writing career following graduation from College Louis Riel. Driven by a dream to someday work as a magazine editor, Erin began publishing the writing she'd been collecting in a cardboard box over the years, producing her own homemade 'Zines and poetry chapbooks and selling them locally.

That enterprise was only the beginning of Erin's entrepreneurial efforts. She enrolled in a college course on magazine writing and was soon writing music and show reviews for Winnipeg's Uptown newspaper. Her first article for a university newspaper was about women skateboarders in Winnipeg and the article, complete with photographs and Erin's byline, landed on the front page.

Now, Erin publishes her own magazine. Betty, Canada's first all girl skateboard magazine. The magazine is distributed at selected locations in Winnipeg. Erin has also written for two other magazines and just finished an internship at CBC television where she's discovered a new passion--television writing. Erin's focus and passion for her work have turned her early dreams into reality and will most certainly ensure success in her future endeavors.
