Achievements
Congratulations to Irene Gordon on the launch of two new titles, A People on the Move: Métis of the
Western Plains and Tecumseh:
Diplomat and Warrior in the War of 1812 at McNally Robinson's
on May 3rd. Irene is a retired teacher-librarian turned freelance
writer who lives along the historic Assiniboine River just west of
Winnipeg. Her passion for history, reading and writing has been strong
since childhood, as has her love for the outdoors.
Doreen has sat on various boards of directors for the past 25 years.
During that time, she has gleaned valuable information that she shares
in an easy-to-understand, conversational style for novices and seasoned
members alike. Whether you're asked to sit on a trade union board, a
non-profit board for a community group or church, a business-focused
board of an association or chamber of commerce, or the board of a
charitable organization, Before You Say Yes … will show you what
to ask and do before you agree to stay on - or walk away.

Doreen
Pendgracs received the 2009 PWAC Regional Volunteer Award at the
AGM held in Toronto in conjuction with MagNet.
Doreen was
nominated by PWAC Saskatchewan member Marie Powell Mendenhall and PWAC
Edmonton President Rusti Lehay.
In her nomination, Marie wrote of Doreen:
I would like to nominate Doreen Pendgracs for the Prairies Regional
Volunteer Award. When I attended my first AGM in Vancouver two years
ago, Doreen went out of her way to make me feel welcome. She worked
hard to organize the Winnipeg AGM in 2008, and the post-AGM trip to
Hecla, Manitoba. As well, Doreen agreed to travel to Saskatchewan in
November 2008 to facilitate our first-ever Saskatchewan professional
development session. In spite of an unexpected snowstorm that weekend,
14 people attended from across the province. She generously reduced her
fee and helped us to find funding in order to host the event, and
stayed to go for supper and socialize with Saskatchewan PWAC members
after her talk.
Just to outline some of her other activities for PWAC over the years:
Doreen joined
PWAC in 1997 and was immediately recruited to serve on the planning
committee for the1998 AGM that was held in Winnipeg. She served as
Membership Chair for the chapter from 1997-1999, and served as RD for
Prairies and the North for 4 years (from 1999-2003). Doreen won the
Lawrence Jackson Memorial Award of achievement in 2004 for her work on
the PWAC board and on the Access Copyright Board. She also served as a
rep for PWAC and the Manitoba Writers Guild on the Access Copyright
Board for six years (from March, 2003 to March, 2009.) She chaired the
local planning committee for the PWAC 2008 National Conference in
Winnipeg from May 2007 to June 2008. She has served as a mentor to
several new PWAC members, and brought several new members into the
Manitoba chapter as a result of the writing courses she taught at the
Manitoba Writers' Guild. She is also the MB rep for the Canadian
Freelance Union and the Travel Media Association of Canada.
